Brocklesby Park won by 4 wickets
Match Report
15 WANTED TO WIN, 8 BALLS TO GO - THEN IT HAPPENED...
A thrilling finish brought victory to Brocklesby in last night's final in the Grimsby Town knock-out cricket competition when they beat Tommy McCann's XI with only two balls to spare. McCann's XI,with a lead of 13 runs on the first innings batted first and made 105 for seven of which S. Watson contributed an unbeaten 54. Burbidge the Brocklesby skipper, took six for 50 in eight overs.
So with the worst of the light to come, Brocklesby set out to get 119 to win - and they looked like losing even in the final over. Rose, who got most of the runs in the first innings, and Van den Bos, were out for 11 runs with three overs gone.
BEHIND THE CLOCK
The third wicket fell at 42 but L. Coulthurst and R. Coulthurst began to push the score along well, though still a shade behind the required ratio. They hit the ball hard with stylish, powerful drives only to see the damp, slow outfield and the deeply placed field rob them of numerous fours. At 77, with four eight-ball overs to go and 42 wanted to win, R. Coulthurst was out, followed by his partner two runs later.
FULL LENGTH
Flear joined Haines but the tempo naturally slowed with the new batsman just in. There was some smart running, particularly in snatching the extra run. Flear, on one occasion, had to dive full length to make his ground in the best washing powder TV advert style and he got his shirt stained, too.
VITAL OVER
Haines went, Burbidge came in. Three swings brought 2, 4, 2, and left Brocklesby with the sizeable task of needing 15 runs in the last over to win. Burbidge faced Gardener. He got two off the first ball. Then it happened. He swept viciously at the next one and amid a roar from the Brocklesby followers it dropped over the line for a six. So with six balls left and seven runs wanted first time, Burbidge took a single off the third ball and Flear hit the next three for two apiece to bring a victory greeted by car hooters and well deserved applause. Mr A.G.C. Hardbord, chairman of Grimsby Town, introduced Mr H. Wilson, chairman of Lincolnshire C.C.C. who presented the trophies.
