Fred was the son of John Holdway, head kennelman & sub postmaster at Brocklesby.

He returned the next year and after being elected captain, set about improving the standard of cricket at Brocklesby. By 1910, the club had moved from playing village teams to the best teams in North Lincolnshire and Hull.

Fred missed the whole of the 1908 season through illness and spent time recovering at Hastings.

In the mid 1920s Fred moved to Longstowe in Cambridgeshire, worked as a butler and continued to play cricket into his fifties.
