Reverend John French Flowers
Born: 4th January 1856, Ulceby Died: 10th March 1926, aged 70 Brother: Richmond Flowers Brother: Field Flowers Educated: Lincoln College (Oxford) Occupation: Vicar of Bonby, Vicar of Carlton Magna Biography: Played full back in Grimsby Town's two earliest FA Cup ties. Emigrated to Nokomis, Saskatchewan, Canada. Rev. Flowers lost two sons in WW1. 2nd Lieutenant Wiliam Henry Field Flowers, York and Lancs. Regiment, who died of wounds on April 15th, 1918. He was wounded in the neighbourhood of Bailleul, and died in the ambulance. On one occasion he manned a German machine gun and turned it on the enemy; and when, owing to heavy casualties, he was left in charge of the battalion, "he did magnificently," and the Colonel said he "did not know what he would have done without him." His name was to have been sent up for promotion and decoration. Captain Humphry French Flowers, R.A.F., who was killed on October 14th, 1918, aged 22. He was shot down "while putting up a splendid fight against a strong formation of German scouts which suddenly appeared out of the mist." |
